The Rest of Your Life

Luke 10:38-42 “Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

Exo 20:8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

Sometimes, there are too many plates spinning and you can’t keep up. Can you slow down and get some order in your life?

There’s a secret in Scripture about rest.

We can find a place where God orders our steps. He is in control of our day, our time, our work, our play.

The Sabbath is a day God commands rest, no work.

God did not take a break from all His hard work. God is an awesome and mighty creator. He set a pattern.

Exo 20:9-11 “Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

Busyness has become a way of life for many people. Many wear it like a badge of honor. The busier we are, the more important we feel.

Rom 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Don’t be squeezed into the world’s mold. The world wants to teach us how to pattern our lives. This is what made Martha so angry at Mary.

Martha was working hard preparing a meal for their special guest, Jesus. Mary didn’t show up to perform her duties as a lady of the house. Frustration with others and situations is just an indicator that you have lost trust in God. You might be working in a way different from the way God wants you to work. Being loaded down by worries is not God’s will.

There is something about the toil and stress of your life that is outside of God’s will. A New Testament Sabbath rest is God’s will for your life.

When God does your work for you, open up the front windows and ravens come in and bring food. The oil won’t run out. The shoes won’t wear out. Their clothes didn’t wear out. There was plenty of food and water. What would it be if God allowed all the stuff that we toil for to be His job?

Sometimes we work when we should rest.

Psalm 127:1 “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.”

Stop running in the hamster wheel that takes you nowhere! Let the Lord take you out of that cage and put you into something else. Cease from your work and do the work of God.

We are saved by the work of Jesus. It might be free for you, but it was NOT free for Him!

If you exchange your work for His work, you can enter into His rest.

The Ten Commandments are not ten suggestions! They are relevant. They are not obsolete. ‘Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, etc.’ Why is the commandment about the Sabbath ignored?

Rom 14:5-6 “One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.”

The answer in keeping the Sabbath:

Isaiah 28:10-12 “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.”

When the Spirit of God moves on you supernaturally and causes you to do stuff you couldn’t do, you’ve entered into that rest. Getting into the Spirit of God is that rest, that Sabbath day rest.

Walking in His Spirit is that REST! Just enter into that Holy Ghost rest. You can do this every day.

Mat 11:28 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

It’s easy to work yourself into a frenzy. Jesus wants to take your yoke and give you His.

Mat 11:29-30 “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

If you live for God hard, life is easy, but if you live for God easy, life is hard.

Work as hard as you can to get into the Holy Ghost. Let His Spirit flow. Study God’s Word, pray, seek Him all the time.

Hard work is one thing, but stress-laden is another.

Previous generations worked hard, but they knew when to sit on the porch and talk. Is it God’s plan to be stressed out? NO! This isn’t a badge of success. It’s good to be a servant, to love, to work hard. The drive inside can push out God’s order, His peace, His plan for your life. You can work a little too much and find yourself without God, outside of His will.

You can do things in the flesh and accomplish nothing in the process.

Sometimes, you must stop and let your soul catch up with your body. God’s order and God’s peace is spending time with Him. Get into His Spirit and enjoy His rest. It’s not your work but His.

Jesus was a busy man. Jesus was also very peaceful and well-tempered.

Heb 4:1-3 “Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.”

The people already mandated to keep the Sabbath still needed to enter God’s rest.

Heb 4:4-11 “For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.”

Work hard to enter into God’s rest. Don’t miss heaven because you’re working too hard here.

6 Signs you are not in God’s rest:

  1. You are Driven by Results and Accomplishments. Jesus said to seek first the Kingdom of God. Luke 21:34 ‘The cares of this life could become a snare.’ Mark 4:19 Results are important, but the steps just as important.
  2. You are Seeking Affirmation from People, being noticed. Let God’s affirmation be enough.
  3. You are Unsatisfied with Now, Always Seeking More. There is no peace there. You need the Holy Ghost. Heb 13:5 You are enough.
  4. You Start to Compromise Your Integrity. It doesn’t matter how you get there, just get there, short-cuts. You need to rest. God is interested in the process.
  5. People become things. You use people. Jesus died for them and you. Rest in the Holy Ghost. The relationships matter.
  6. Your Busyness Makes Good Relationships Impossible. Family, friends, God get shut out.

1 Cor 7:32-35 “But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord: But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband. And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction.”

The Holy Ghost will give you balance in your relationships.
